Two years ago today, with fatherhood vacuuming up the large chunks of personal time I previously used to write, Shallow Center was launched as a way to share "my thoughts -- sometimes serious, often not -- on things that matter to me and things I find interesting. My New Yorker debut will have to wait until my sweet, wonderful daughter generously returns some of my time to me. Until then, I'll have lunch hours, late nights, and other random times to do smaller bits of the kind of writing that isn't as abundant in my life these days. Essays, sports observations, reviews, commentary -- just about anything is fair game ... ."
This effort has been more fun and fulfilling than I ever imagined it would be. Whether you're a regular visitor or someone who drops by from time to time, thanks very much for reading. A special thank-you goes to those who continue the conversation by either posting comments or e-mailing me. Your feedback and insights help this endeavor more than you know. Who needs the New Yorker when I have the blogosphere?

Who needs the New Yorker indeed. The blogosphere has made the mainstream media irrelevant and. worst of all, boring. With a few clicks I can get more good baseball writing than I could spending all day reading the papers.
Speaking of rounders-how 'bout signing Rollins with his lusty .304 OBP to a big extension? There are probably 30 guys at AA or AAA who don't hit and play the level of good but hardly great defense Jimmy provides. Any of them could be paid a little more than $300 K.
Feckless Eddie continues his long-standing tradition of "balancing" every good move (the Ugeth trade) with a bad one.

No, no, thank you Tom. Your blog was one of the first I came across and got me going on a little hobby I enjoy quite a bit. As a matter of fact, I was going to post something on this very topic later on in the week.

I read your site once a day. You make me feel a little guilty for not applying myself a little more in the blog-area... :)
