Passing Up the Chance to Examine a Busy Time in Phillies City-State
THE SHALLOW CENTER household hadn't been locked down like this in a good, long while, but last Saturday night its youngest member took ill with what turned out to be strep throat. Nearly a week later, she's only just feeling like herself again. So the missus and I spent a week trading half-days at our respective jobs while we stayed home and plowed through dozens of episodes of Higglytown Heroes. Which is too bad, because spring training is just about over, and there were a couple of Phillies-related items that piqued my interest recently and deserved fuller posts. Such as Pat Burrell's puss-boy whining about how tough Philadelphia is to play in, immediately followed by his admission that he's underachieved. Such as Pat Gillick and Charlie Manuel rolling the dice and inserting both Ryan Madson and Gavin Floyd into the starting rotation. Such as the Phils eighty-sixing Ricardo Rodriguez, rendering the Vicente Padilla trade nothing more than a salary/head-case dump. So many plotlines, so little time, and Opening Day is just about upon us ...
