Wrapped Around Their Finger
A COUPLE of hours before we headed to Citizens Bank Park with our respective spouses for Thursday night's Police show, my sister-in-law and I were discussing whether there were any specific songs we were hoping to hear. We agreed that what we were looking forward to most was a solid roster of the band's greatest hits.
We got that, and much more.
Sting et al. spent nearly two hours merrily skipping through their catalog and delivering songs so familiar that the 45,000 in attendance sung themselves hoarse in harmony. The band was tight -- kind of like the lead singer's sleeveless t-shirt, which had my sister-in-law telling my wife, "Make sure Tom writes about how hot Sting looks." (So noted.) Sting's bass lines thundered throughout the ballpark, Andy Summers dispassionately strung together crisp guitar solos, and an entranced Stewart Copeland rapped away on various percussion instruments all night long. The boys looked as if they were having a lot of fun, too, and my admittedly untrained ear detected not one false note. The show was a hell of a lot of fun, producing a sustained level of euphoria I've rarely encountered in a Philadelphia baseball stadium. The Phillies could learn a lesson about how to satisfy the home crowd.
